If the women denied abortions because of whatever reason it was outlawed where they are didn’t want the babies in the first place and have to carry them to term, who’s going to force them to raise them? Most states give women between 24 hours and 7 days to choose adoption or parenting. Just because you have to have the child doesn’t mean you have to raise it.
If she wouldn’t have chosen parenting from the jump why would she now? Out of guild and peer-pressure? Because it’s alive and someone needs to raise it? Because babies that look like her or have those issues aren’t likely to get adopted so she’s stuck with it? Because giving birth turns on an automatic love and nurturing switch that makes anyone a competent and caring parent?
All this talk about life beginning at conception doesn’t really take into account that neither protection nor parenting begin at conception.
Pregnant women can’t be forced to not drink to safeguard the fetus they didn’t want to carry or to not diet because they don’t want to further ruin their figures from a pregnancy they didn’t want to experience or be a good parent to a child they had no intention of parenting. Maybe they can but by who and to what end? Jail for pregnant women who didn’t want to be pregnant and are now shitty at being pregnant?
Yes, a woman should be able to make choices about her body but if we’re more concerned about the conceived life than the woman conceiving life then shouldn’t we consider the life it will be forced to live once it actually fits everyone’s definition of alive? Some children will get lucky and have mothers, fathers, or other relatives who want them and have the love and competence to raise them. But for others our foster care system is for temporary parenting and adoption is never guaranteed.
Parenting should be an honor not a punishment; a choice not a consequence.
I see a serious dystopia in our future if we can’t seriously address the question: who will raise all these babies women shan’t be allowed to abort?
